After the Roman and the Moorish rule, the Iberian peninsula became Christian. On the border between Europe and Africa, in Andalucia, the centuries of Moorish presence has created a unique culture. Andalusia is known for its art, design and building tecniques, as well as a rich and multifaceted history. Along the Mediterranean coast the climate is subtropical. Relaxation as well as cultural and sports activities  are abundant. Perhaps when you hear of Costa del Sol, you first think of  sun and beaches, however, just a couple km away from the shoreline you will find a fertile undulating mountain landscape, which to a large extent is cultivated with olives, almonds, grapes, tropical fruit, grains, and many local delicasscies. There are numerous hiking trails, and in the Sierra Nevada mountain range winter sports  are popular between December until Mars/April. Cútar is situated in the coastal mountians not far from the sea. As the crow flies, it's a mere 21 km to the center of Malaga, but because the the coastal peaks in between, it's best to take the coast highway then the country road up the river Vélez, 50 min by car. The beaches can be reached in 30 min, Granada and Alhambra in 1.5 hour, and to Sevilla an hour more. Tangier, in Morocco, you can reach by car and boat in 4 hours.
